Fountain. Bottle or Can ???? We want YOUR opinion

Kate and I have been talking about bringing a bit of fun and debate to the blog, since week one of radiation treatment (RT). I guess being bored and in the hospital now with lots of time on our hands presents the perfect opportunity to actually put our point of debate out to you in writing.

After completing that first long day of radiation with all the tedious filming, Kate came out of the treatment room and said, "I need a fountain Pepsi." The nurse quickly offered a can of Pepsi available for the patients. Kate said thank you, but explained that it had to be a fountain Pepsi. So from that day on, while Kate goes in for her treatment, I go to the cafeteria on the 11th floor and get a "fountain Pepsi" and have it waiting for her when she comes out of RT each day. Everyone at the radiation/oncology department is quite entertained by Kate's preference for fountain Pepsi. Her radiation oncologist heard that I was headed for the cafeteria for her fountain drink and offered her one of his cokes from the refrigerator in his office. She said no thanks, it had to be fountain. He laughed and told her the fountain drinks were not as good as they were watered down by the ice. She told him that's what she likes about fountain drinks:)

So we put our silly little debate out to you our blog family and friends. What do you think? We know some of our friends who live overseas have definite opinions on this.
It's wonderful to think that you who have prayed with us, rejoiced with us, cried with us, and walked with us through all the seasons of this journey, can laugh with us too at a silly little thing that has brought laughter and fun to our daily RT routine. And so we give you the great debate... FOUNTAIN, bottle or can?????

no question - fountain wins hands down!! too many years in China with no ice will do that to the best of us! Now, the only thing wrong with the fountain drink is that it needs to be a Sonic Route 44 Vanilla Coke instead of a Pepsi! :) love from all of us, uncle Ben

Jeff would prefer a glass bottle since those are hard to get today, a can is second choice. Fountain pop being third and plastic bottle comes in dead last. I don't really have a preference. :)

A girl after my own heart!!! Kate, I am Kellie's sister-in-law and I pray for you often. I just had to pipe in and say that there is no substitute for a FOUNTAIN Pepsi! In fact, that was my first request in the delivery room as soon as my daughter was born. Hang in there, we are all so encouraged by your strength!

Hey whatever gives you two laughter, I'm all for!!! So I will tell you that I prefer my pepsi with a little rum added to it, so therefore I don't really care whether it came from a bottle, a can, or a fountain. On the other hand,if I am "rum-less", I guess I prefer fountain.
    Hope that clears things up.

Oh goodness. Totally easy--absolutely fountain. If I have my soda of choice (Diet Caffiene Free Coke--whatever is left to drink in that combo, I don't know, but cardiologist says no caffiene...)@ home in cans, I'll usually only drink it if I pour the can over ice. Fountain is much preferred (and one beloved gas station in our little town actually has it in fountain)due to the watering down of the soda and the ice. In fact, I'm taking a break from my PhD work and drinking one right now! :) Kate, I had shingles in Feb.-March (also b/c low immune system). They were the pits. I feel for you and am lifting you up! Take care. With joy, Hillary

Are you kidding? It's FOUNTAIN PEPSI all the way baby! The crushed ice is the best too! I read your blog every day..you are all in my prayers. As much time as you have spent there, they should install a fountain at your nurses station! :) Mary Beth

There is nothing like sitting on a high stool in the drugstore and drinking a fountain vanilla or cherry coke...memories of years gone by.

I'm with you Kate! Fountain drinks for sure! I don't like drinking straight out of a can or bottle even if it is cold........because it is the ICE that ministers to me! :) But, I am weird because I don't like drinking out of a straw either. I like to feel the beverage and ice gently hit my lips as I sip! So, there you have it, my secret is out! After living overseas, you know the littlest things can give us pleasure! May your days be filled with the Fountain drinks of your dreams!!!!
    Love you, Sandy Hammack

Okay, so if the question is, what do we prefer between the three, I would definitely have to agree with Kate. Fountain is the way to go. the other kinds are just stronger and harsher. I'm partial to the fountain drinks at the old drug stores, especially a cherry Coke--that is regular coke that they add the cherry flavoring to. Oh, sooo good. I used to get them all the time at our drugstore growing up, along with a mint chocolate chip ice cream cone. Makes my mouth water to think of such things! Love you gals! Gail Nutter

Bottles are more convenient because you can screw the cap back on and save some for later, but fountain is definately better because you can "chew the ice"!!

Glad to hear you are back home Kate. We were at Children's Tuesday with our grandson and were going to come for a visit but were informed that you had been discharged.

Well, I would have to say- Bottle is the BEST , Fountain is Good and Can will do....

However, since BEST isn't often available except in rare cases :) I would have to say a Fountain drink is the winner! :)

Personally, a fountain drink is good because you get 2 drinks in one! The obvious first is the drink ( coke/pepsi) the second the Ice... this can sometimes be better than the coke... especially if you are in the heat of Thailand!

thanks for allowing us to join in your discussion! :)

For sure not a can. Metal taste from the can. Fountain first then bottle. Continued thoughts and prayers for you all.

First, I want to say Great job to Kate on finishing her junior year!! Way to go! Awesome!!! Well I must agree with Kate on the Fountain drinks, I actually like these because when I was a kid I would go to the drug store with my grand parents on special occassions and get the fountain drink but it also meant an ice cream cone which I loved even more! HA! Love and hugs to each of you! Lisa

I came across this site by accident but you are an inspiration to everyone who has battled challenges in life. Keep up that "can-do" spirit. With faith, you will overcome this challenge.

If it is with a meal or going to drink it all at once, fountain drinks are great but sometimes the mix is not good! With bottles and cans you don't have that problem. As someone else has already said, with a bottle, you can save some for later - i can't usely drink a whole can at one time. The problem is where i live there is no Mt Dew - which is the best Pepsi product there is! However, i can get the small bottle cokes for only 15 cents - when they are cold - real good! Glad ya'll are back home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have always preferred a plastic bottle. I think that it's because I can screw the lid back on tight and not spill it on myself! : )

Have a great day to all the Dillon women!

Fountal all the way. But I'm the strange one. I like it WITHOUT ice....it just tastes so much better than bottle or can.

    Kate,
I'm playing catch up on blog, but just have to put my vote in for can diet COKE (if Diet Dr. Pepper is unavailable). Problem with fountain is that the carbonation is sometimes "off" and tastes funny. Of course, for those of us in the south, Pepsi is a sin -- all soda is COKE. We prefer sweet ice tea most of all though!

    Addendum to prior comment:
... but I do like fountain drinks if the ice is chewable (don't tell my dentis).

Hi Kate, I'm your second cousin from Virginia, Amy. I'm not a soda (or "Pop" as they say in PA) drinker, but if I had to choose, it would be fountain. I like to chew ice. I've been praying for you & your family....you are an inspiration to us all!

Oh, Kate...fountain??? No, no, no. It completely depends on the syrup to soda ratio in the particular fountain! Just like the bottle or can depends on where the soda is bottled. For instance - anyone in the know can tell you that Dr. Pepper bottled in a certain small town in Texas is much sweeter because they use cane sugar instead of corn syrup in their mix. (The only place in the world that does.) Also, different countries have different recipes. I'm not kidding. Canned Coke from France is slightly different from canned Coke in Britain. Crazy, yes? It's all in the LOCATION! So - perhaps the fountain in the cafeteria does have the most stellar Pepsi...but since I haven't tasted it, I'm going to have to go with bottled. :-) :-) LOVE YOU!!!!!

I don't drink a lot of pop but when I do definitely fountain with LOTS of ice! I'm an ice cruncher (my dentist doesn't approve.) Cans are yucky! Susan

Kate, Kate, Kate! After being cut off from the outside world in Alaska(Nancy and I were on vacation crusing!), I just read the blog. I must comment. Now I do agree with you about the fountain drink. It is definitely the best. But you and the rest are forgetting the most important element of all. You need about four or five scoops of vanilla ice cream in the pepsi(or whatever you prefer). Please try with ice cream or it is sadly lacking. Nancy and I love you, and we are so happy that radiation is past and that the shingles are no more. We continue to pray.

    Love,

Bob and Nancy Mat is our son-in-law, and I am signed in on his account. That's why it says "Mat says"!
